ABOUT AMERICANS & THE WORLD

ABOUT AMERICANS & THE WORLD
The Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) offers this website, Americans and the World . This website will report on US public opinion on a broad range of international policy issues, integrating all publicly available polling data. It will be continually updated as new data become available, so that users are assured of getting a ‘state of the art’ analysis.

Americans and the World will provide comprehensive reports on a wide range of topics—each report integrating and explaining as much as a decade of polling data.
Our hope and expectation is that this will provide a valuable resource for policymakers, journalists, researchers, non-governmental organizations, students, and all individuals who would like to know more about American public opinion.
Americans and the World is made possible by generous grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Tides Foundation, and the Compton Foundation.

AMERICAN DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF MAN

AMERICAN DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS
AND DUTIES OF MAN
(Adopted by the Ninth International Conference of American States,
Bogotá, Colombia, 1948)
WHEREAS:
The American peoples have acknowledged the dignity of the individual, and
their national constitutions recognize that juridical and political institutions, which
regulate life in human society, have as their principal aim the protection of the essential
rights of man and the creation of circumstances that will permit him to achieve spiritual
and material progress and attain happiness;
The American States have on repeated occasions recognized that the essential
rights of man are not derived from the fact that he is a national of a certain state, but
are based upon attributes of his human personality;
The international protection of the rights of man should be the principal guide
of an evolving American law;
The affirmation of essential human rights by the American States together with
the guarantees given by the internal regimes of the states establish the initial system of
protection considered by the American States as being suited to the present social and
juridical conditions, not without a recognition on their part that they should increasingly
strengthen that system in the international field as conditions become more favorable,
The Ninth International Conference of American States
AGREES:
To adopt the following
AMERICAN DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS
AND DUTIES OF MAN
Preamble
All men are born free and equal, in dignity and in rights, and, being endowed
by nature with reason and conscience, they should conduct themselves as brothers one
to another.
The fulfillment of duty by each individual is a prerequisite to the rights of all.
Rights and duties are interrelated in every social and political activity of man. While
rights exalt individual liberty, duties express the dignity of that liberty.
Duties of a juridical nature presuppose others of a moral nature which support
them in principle and constitute their basis.
Inasmuch as spiritual development is the supreme end of human existence and
the highest expression thereof, it is the duty of man to serve that end with all his
strength and resources.
Since culture is the highest social and historical expression of that spiritual
development, it is the duty of man to preserve, practice and foster culture by every
means within his power.
And, since moral conduct constitutes the noblest flowering of culture, it is the
duty of every man always to hold it in high respect.

American beauties get ugly

It hasn’t quite escalated to Nancy-Tonya, but the feud between American alpine skiers Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso has clearly divided the nation for which they each won two medals in Vancouver.

Are you for Team Lindsey or Team Julia?

Mancuso’s reported comments about downhill champion Vonn and a “popularity contest” within the U.S. team, sparked media speculation of a rift between the two. Truth is, there’s been a rift since they were teenagers. Even though they travel together for most of the year, both said they would never hang out together on a Saturday night.

“We are both very different and we both got to these Games and got our medals in completely opposite ways,” Mancuso said. “I am sure that is what fuels the fire even more, but of course it is always good to see a fellow American on the podium.”

The rivalry had never been classified as friendly and reached a boiling point Wednesday. That’s when Mancuso left the giant slalom in tears after a Vonn wipeout forced her to restart her first run. She ended up finishing eighth after Thursday’s second run, ending her shot at a gold medal in Vancouver.

“The way that it came across that it was a media attention fight or something like that — that is just ridiculous,” Mancuso said.

“Alpine skiing isn’t a team sport,” Vonn said before the Games. “There’s always going to be that competition.”

"Invariant Drinfeld twists on group algebras", International Workshop/Special Session of CMS Summer Meeting 2009 "Groups and Hopf Algebras", St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada (5 June 2009)
Abstract: Drinfeld twists were introduced by Drinfeld in his work on quasi-Hopf algebras; they have been used to classify certain classes of (co)semisimple Hopf algebras. In joint work with Pierre Guillot (arXiv:0903.2807), after observing that the invariant Drinfeld twists on a Hopf algebra form a group, we determine this group when the Hopf algebra is the algebra of a finite group G. The answer involves the group of class-preserving outer automorphisms of G as well as all abelian normal subgroups of G of central type. In my lecture I shall also present several examples for which the group of invariant twists has been completely computed by us.
"Hopf Galois extensions up to homotopy", Second joint meeting of AMS, DMV, ÖMG, Mainz, Germany (16-19 June 2005)
Abstract: (Joint work with Hans-Jürgen Schneider) Hopf Galois extensions are noncommutative analogues of principal fibre bundles with structural group replaced by a Hopf algebra. I discuss a concept of homotopy for Hopf Galois extensions and show how it allows a certain classification of such extensions. In particular, we determine all Hopf Galois extensions up to homotopy in the case when the Hopf algebra is a Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum enveloping algebra.

GAMING TECHNOLOGY

What sets Star Trek apart from other slot games is the use of the Adaptive Gaming technology which adapts to the player and what the player has achieved during his playing session. When you play for the first time you have the option to create a login in account and choose a personal icon from the list of characters; Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Scotty or Sulu.
This account allows you to save your progress along with the medals that you have earned so you can pick up the game where you left off the next time you play. The account is connected to a central network so it does not matter where you play the game as long as you log into your account. I played Star Trek at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and when I visited Sam’s Town in Tunica, MS, the game remembered my progress from my previous session in Connecticut.

As the video game market became flooded with poor-quality cartridge games created by numerous companies attempting to enter the market, and over-production of high profile releases such as the Atari 2600E.T. and Pacman grossly underperformed, the popularity of personal computers for education rose dramatically. In 1983, consumer interest in console video games dwindled to historical lows, as interest in computer games rose. adaptation of
By 1996, the rise of Microsoft Windows and success of 3D console titles such as Super Mario 64 sparked great interest in hardware accelerated 3D graphics on the IBM PC compatible, and soon resulted in attempts to produce affordable solutions with the ATI Rage, Matrox Mystique and Silicon Graphics ViRGE. Tomb Raider, which was released in 1996, was one of the first third person shooter games and was praised for its revolutionary graphics. As 3D graphics libraries such as DirectX and OpenGL matured and knocked proprietary interfaces out of the market, these platforms gained greater acceptance in the market, particularly with their demonstrated benefits in games such as Unreal.[11] However, major changes to the Microsoft Windows operating system, by then the market leader, made many older MS-DOS-based games unplayable on Windows NT, and later, Windows XP (without using an emulator, such as DOSbox). The faster graphics accelerators and improving CPU technology resulted in increasing levels of realism in computer games. During this time, the improvements introduced with products such as ATI's Radeon R300 and NVidia's GeForce 6 Series have allowed developers to increase the complexity of modern game engines. PC gaming currently tends strongly toward improvements in 3D graphics.

The Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is a multirole jet fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. Designed as a lightweight, daytime fighter, it evolved into a successful multirole aircraft. The F-16's versatility is a paramount reason it has proven a success on the export market, having been selected to serve in the air forces of 25 nations.

The F-16 is the largest Western jet fighter program with over 4,400 aircraft built since production was approved in 1976.] Though no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, advanced versions are still being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.

USB

A USB flash drive consists of flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) 1.1 or 2.0 interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, much smaller than a floppy disk, and most weigh less than 30 g (1 oz).[1] Storage capacities in 2009 can be as large as 256 GB[2] with steady improvements in size and price per capacity. Some allow 1 million write or erase cycles[3][4] and have a 10-year data retention cycle.

Flash memory combines a number of older technologies, with lower cost, lower power consumption and small size made possible by recent advances in microprocessor technology. The memory storage was based on earlier EPROM and EEPROM technologies. These had very limited capacity, were very slow for both reading and writing, required complex high-voltage drive circuitry, and could only be re-written after erasing the entire contents of the chip.

sony laptop

Laptops keep getting thinner and lighter, but some concept laptops take portable to a new level. Orkin Design's Rolltop consists of an OLED display that can start as a rolled-up mat and deploy as a multi-touch 17-inch laptop. My beastly HP laptop just shed a tear of envy.

The Orkin laptop can also transform into a tablet PC operable with a stylus, or become a standup flat screen display. A power adapter and other features fit with the carrying canister that comes with a convenient holding strap.

LCD (liquid crystal display)

A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. Its uses include monitors for computers, televisions, instrument panels, and other devices ranging from aircraft cockpit displays, to every-day consumer devices such as video players, gaming devices, clocks, watches, calculators, and telephones. Among its major features are its lightweight.

Each pixel of an LCD typically consists of a layer of molecules aligned between two transparent electrodes, and two polarizing filters, the axes of transmission of which are (in most of the cases) perpendicular to each other. With no actual liquid crystal between the polarizing filters, light passing through the first filter would be blocked by the second (crossed) polarizer.

OPTICAL FIBER

Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) systems offer the promise for low cost applications in communications, data transmission, illumination, lighting, imaging, sensing and light transmission. POF systems can provide the same advantages of glass optical fibers (GOF) but at lower cost and easier use. Glass optical fiber systems have received more attention than POF, mainly due to their rapid acceptance in the telephone industry. Recent developments in POF technology now make POF a contender for a large number of data and audio applications at data rates up to 100 Mbps and distances up to 100 meters. Plastic optical fiber systems are also finding increased applications for sensors and lighting. The technology is also moving rapidly as evidenced by recent papers on multimode and single mode POF, high temperature fibers, integrated POF circuits, laminated lightguides, discrete components both active and passive, optical switching, and other developments too numerous to mention.

LAPTOP

On March 2, 2000, Governor Angus King of Maine launched a bold initiative to turn his state and its children into leaders of the digital revolution. King's proposal, "From Lunch Boxes to Laptops," would make Maine the first state to consider a child's ownership of a personal computer as much an inalienable right as the right to attend school. Specifically, King submits that every student should graduate from sixth grade not only with fluency in using computers but also with a personal computer to keep and use in school and out. Governor King credits Seymour Papert with inspiring and helping to shape the plan. (See the link to "Blue Hill Man Inspired King's Laptop Proposal" at the end of this article.)

This unprecedented plan has drawn both high praise and harsh criticism and has sparked discussion across the nation. Few issues in Maine have given rise in such a short time to so much public writing—editorials, op-ed pieces, columns, letters to the editor—and discussion on radio talk shows, Web sites, chat rooms, and other such forums. Papert has commented that whether or not the proposal is supported by the state legislature, which in the end has to approve it, it has already advanced education by stirring up such a wealth of discussion. "The ballpark of discussion has changed," he says. "People who thought that the question about technology in education was whether there should be a computer in every classroom have had their eyes opened to the idea that something much bigger is at stake."

the final analysis

In the final analysis, aging and death have only one cause: for whatever reason, the atoms and molecules in our bodies have moved from their proper positions; and other molecules and atoms have moved into positions where they should not be When we take a supplemental vitamin or hormone or a medicine, all we can do with today's technology is to inject it into our bloodstream or swallow it,

As cellular phone usage

As cellular phone usage is becoming more popular, the question has arisen as to the effect of these devices on today's society. Does the use of cell phones help to expand communication between people or diminish it? There are two opposing opinions that deal with communication and cell phone use.
Cell phones can also allow you to stay in closer contact with your family members. Your children can call you if they need a ride home or your spouse can call to remind you to pick up a gallon of milk on the way home. For family member who live out of town, you can talk for hours at little or no cost to you. Cell phones seem to be a perfect way to bring people closer together
